Radiology Practice Expense Report

New for 2026, BFMV has released the BFMV Radiology Practice Expense Benchmark Report, a new industry resource designed to address the longstanding lack of benchmarking data for radiology operating expenses. BFMV noticed the challenges valuators face when establishing an FMV range for radiology subsidy requests, particularly due to limited industry data on operating expenses. While provider compensation benchmarks are widely available, comparable resources for radiology operating expenses have been scarce. FMV analyses typically require an adjusted profit and loss statement that reduces actual collections by FMV provider compensation and FMV operating expenses to determine the indicated subsidy or loss.

The new BFMV report helps fill this gap by analyzing data from ten radiology groups representing more than 170 radiologists nationwide. The report provides normalized operating expense metrics that offer clear, comparative insight into the financial structure of radiology practices. Operating expenses are evaluated as a percentage of both patient collections and total practice revenue, enabling consistent, apples‑to‑apples comparisons across the industry.

Expense data were collected across a comprehensive set of categories, including:

  • Total Employed Physician Compensation

  • Total Physician Benefit Expense

  • Total Contracted Physician Compensation

  • Total Advanced Practice Provider Compensation

  • Total Advanced Practice Provider Benefit Cost

  • General Administrative

  • Accounting and Legal

  • Information Technology

  • Building, Occupancy, and Depreciation

  • Furniture, Equipment, and Depreciation

  • Professional Liability Insurance

  • Other Insurance Premiums

  • Outside Professional Fees

  • Promotion And Marketing
